For more than 500 years, people in South East Asia have been using the root of "White Kwao Krua" for its profound Anti-Aging properties. This root has been identified as Pueraria Mirifica Airy Shaw et Suvat (scientific name), which belongs to family Papilionaceae (Leguminosae).
Folklore goes on to say that the root is a "Fountain of Youth" for aged women and men. The name "Mirifica" in Latin means Miracle. There are more than 13 related, identified species of Pueraria with similar tuberous roots they can be differentiated by the taxonomical characteristics of leaf, flower, inflorescence, fruit and covering trichomes.
There are 13 "Different Species" of Pueraria‘s Family : * But only "Botanical Pueraria Mirifica has the "Unique Phytoestrogen: Deoxymiroestrol & Miroestrol " which posses the highest estrogenic activity among the known phyto-estrogens due to "molecule structural similarity to estradiol". *
But, the only species with distinct estrogenic activity was found to be Pueraria Mirifica Airy Shaw et Suvat. (herein after "Pueraria Mirifica"),even the taxonomically close species Pueraria Candollei Graph Ex Benth does not contain any measurable amount of Miroestrol & Deoxymiroestrol (with have highest estrogenic activity among the known phytoestrogens in the world), and Pueraria Candollei also has lesser amount of isoflavonoids.
For best results the location, age of plant (2-4 years), atmospheric conditions(no rain), drying process and storage conditions are carefully monitored.
Local communities in Thailand have used Pueraria Mirifica for well over 100 years, specifically for its rejuvenating qualities. They belief in the rejuvenating properties of Pueraria Mirifica has been passing down from one generation to another and more recently through the publication by Luang Anusan Suntara (1931). In these writing it is mentioned that the use of this root, will make the skin smooth like a six year old child and allow you to live 1,000 years and prevent suffering from parasites, while also enhancing memory. In
May 1931, Luang Anusan Suntara published a pamphlet on the
subject of "Kwao Krua" describing different ways of
preparing folk medicine using Pueraria Mirifica and
the claims of its rejuvenating power. It is stated in the pamphlet that Pueraria
Mirifica can: 8) Alleviate sleep disorders
In 1932, Dr. A.F.G. Kerr, the Director of the Botanical Section of the Journal of the Siam Society, directed the attention of the scientific community to the fact that the tuberous roots of a Thai plant called "Kwao Krua", mistakenly identified then as Butea Superba, were considered to be of value as a rejuvenating drug. Dr. Kerr was the first to create international awareness of the rejuvenating qualities of this plant, which subsequently led to the isolation of a potent phyto-estrogen that is unique to this plant only and to the identification of the plant as Pueraria Mirifica in 1952. What is Pueraria Mirifica ? Source : Medical Plant Research Institute Department of Medical Sciences, Ministry of Public Health , Thailand Pueraria mirifica Airy Shaw & Suvatabandhu is an indigenous herb of Thailand, known in Thai as "Kwao Kreu" or "Kwao Kreu Kao" (White Kwao Kreu). It belongs to the Family Leguminosae,subfamily Papilionoideae. The plants are commonly found in abundant in the forests in the north, the west and the northeast of Thailand at the altitude of 300-800 meters above sea level, Active principles in this plant are found in the tuberous root, which looks like o chain of round-shaped bulbs of various sizes connected to the next one via small root throughout the entire length of the root. The shape and size of the tuberous root are diverse depending on the environment in which it exists.
There are nine species of plants in the genus Pueraria in Thailand that look alike, However, the authenticity of Pueraria mirifica can be clearly verified from the distinct characteristics of the stamen of the flower and its hairy pod.
The Plant : Twinning long life herbal plant exist only in Thailand especially the northern and western part. Associate grown with the moderate - size trees ranking from timber wood to bamboo in the deciduous rain forest. The tuber enable to enlarge and accumulate at least 13 known chemicals classified as “PHYTOESTROGENS” and comprised of ; miroestrol, daidzein, genistin, genistein, B-sitosterol, stigmasterol, coumestrol, pueraria, compesterol, mirificoumestan, kwakhurin and mirificin.
Cultivar : Due to self-fertilized and long-term exist in different area in Thailand, many varieties had been found. To establish a commercial scale production to serve the world demand, 3 best cultivar had been sorted out from the jungle and adapted for huge plantation area and were name as Pueraria-I, II and III.
In addition the tissue culture of this plant has been developed and field trials have been studied, At the present time, Thailand natural product Industry is able to establish organic farming of this plant for the continuous supply of the raw material. |

The compounds that make Pueraria mirifica different
from any other phytoestrogen containing plants in the Family Leguminosae are Miroestrol and Deoxymiroestrol, which possess
highest estrogenic activity among the known phytoestrogens due
to structural similarity to estradiol. Miroestrol was actually
the first compound isolated from this plant by a group of
German chemists in 1940, but the plant had been mistakenly
reported then as Butea superba.
The isolation and identification of deoxymiroestrol from the root of Pueraria mirifica has just been reported in the February 2000 issue of the Journal of Natural Products. The authors proposed that since deoxymiroestrol is easily oxidized to miroestrol, deoxymiroestrol (not the previously reported miroestrol) is more likely to be the actual chemical constituent of Pueraria mirifica.
However, it is very likely that the two phytoestrogens coexist in the root of this plant. As shown below, the chemical structures of two compounds are very similar to that of estradiol, the main human estrogen.
In addition to miroestrol and deoxymiroestrol, Pueraria mirifica also contains other chemicals that belong to isoflavone and coumestran groups of phytoestrogens, e.g., Genistein, Daidzein, Daidzin, Genistin, and Coumestrol that are usually found in soybeans (Table 1). However, the estrogenic activity of Miroestrol and Deoxymiroestrol is much more potent than that of soy isoflavones.
